Argentine Primera Betting Guide: Draws, Goals and Favourites

Thirteen calendar years of Argentine Primera results and 1X2 prices. It is a low-scoring, draw-heavy league where the market is mostly right and occasionally, specifically, wrong.

Most bettors meet the Argentine Primera through the big clubs and assume it plays like any other top flight. It does not. My 1X2 betting tips page carries the day-to-day picks; this file is the groundwork underneath them, built from 5,330 matches with full-time scores and 1X2 prices.

The headline is simple. Home sides won 43.4%, 30.0% of matches were drawn and goals averaged just 2.27 a game. Favourites won 46.4% against 45.8% implied, so the market is close overall. The gaps open up inside particular price bands and particular clubs, and those are what I would actually study.

Chapter 1Home sides lead every year, with 2020 almost level

The stacked bars split each calendar year into home wins, draws and away wins. The home share sits in a tight band most years, peaking at 46.1% in 2014 and dropping to 35.8% in 2020, when away wins nearly drew level. Draws peaked at 33.5% in 2023 across 582 matches.

My one real caveat belongs here. Argentina changed format repeatedly, with short tournaments, a 30-team year, July–June seasons and cup-style phases, so these calendar years are a convenience, not clean seasons. Past rates also move with prices, and a margin sits on every real bet.

What I take from this is that the draw is a structural feature, not a blip. In most years it hovers around three in ten, and any approach that treats the stalemate as an afterthought starts on the wrong foot.

Chapter 2Draws land slightly more often than the prices suggest

The base-rate table is the reference sheet I keep open. The draw landed 30.0% against a margin-free 29.3% implied, a fair price of 3.34. Away wins went the other way, landing 26.7% against 28.2% implied, so the road side has been slightly overrated.

Goals are scarce. Only 40.0% of matches went over 2.5 (fair odds 2.50), over 3.5 came in 20.1% of the time (fair 4.97), and both teams scored in 45.3%. There are no goal-line prices in the records, so those fair odds are a yardstick for comparing quotes, not evidence of value.

"Odds imply" = average margin-free 1X2 probability; no goals-market prices exist in the records.

If a price on unders or on no-BTTS looks short, check it against these frequencies before dismissing it. This league leans low far more often than a casual glance suggests.

Chapter 3One-nil, one-all and goalless are the top three scores

The correct-score bars confirm the low-scoring picture. 1-0 led at 13.3% (fair odds 7.52), with 1-1 at 13.0% and 0-0 at 12.0% close behind. A goalless draw is nearly as common as the most frequent score in the league.

The ten most common scores covered 82.3% of all matches, and the list stops at 3-0 with 3.9%. Anything involving three goals for one side is fringe territory here.

For correct-score players, the 0-0 at fair odds of 8.32 is the line I would compare first, because in many leagues that result is priced as a long shot and here it is routine.

Chapter 4Long-priced favourites fall short, mid-range ones hold up

Each row compares what the odds implied for the favourite with how often it actually won. The 1.70–1.99 band is the standout: 54.3% won against 50.5% implied across 1,198 games, an ROI of +0.6%. That is roughly breakeven at a major bookmaker, not a profit engine.

The weak spot is the flimsy favourite at 2.40 or longer. Those sides won 33.8% against 36.5% implied over 1,336 games, an ROI of −13.7%. Short-priced favourites under 1.40 won 71.1% against 72.0% implied, at −8.0%.

Backing every favourite returned −5.8% at the major-bookmaker price and −0.2% at the best available price. Price shopping alone closes most of the gap, which tells me the market is efficient enough that only selective, well-priced bets deserve attention.

Chapter 5Big clubs win most, but Godoy Cruz paid best

Among the ten ever-present clubs, River Plate had the best record at 50.7% wins, including 56.5% at home, yet backing them every game returned −9.2%. Boca Juniors won 49.9% with the strongest home rate of the group at 60.2%. The market knows these clubs and prices them accordingly.

Godoy Cruz won only 36.5% but returned +3.9% at flat stakes, the best of the ten, while Independiente returned −10.7%. Newell's Old Boys had the lowest win rate at 36.1% and the lowest BTTS rate at 39.8%. Lanús matches had the highest BTTS rate at 49.3%.

Goals/game = total goals in the club's matches. ROI at the major-bookmaker price, flat stakes.

Reputation costs money in Argentina. A famous name at a short price has tended to be a worse bet than an unfashionable side the market undersells.

Before you bet in this league

  1. Respect the drawDraws landed 30.0% of the time against 29.3% implied, so a fair draw price is around 3.34. Compare any quote with that before writing the stalemate off.
  2. Lean towards fewer goalsOnly 40.0% of matches went over 2.5 goals and 12.0% finished 0-0. Use the fair odds of 2.50 and 8.32 as reference points when you check goal-line and correct-score quotes.
  3. Beware flimsy favouritesFavourites at 2.40 or longer won 33.8% against 36.5% implied, an ROI of −13.7%. The 1.70–1.99 band held up best but only reached +0.6%, so treat it as breakeven rather than a source of profit.
