I'm Rowan Maddox. I came to football betting later than a lot of people I write alongside — it was only a couple of years ago that I stopped treating it as background noise to a Saturday afternoon and started actually keeping records of what I expected to happen and why. The thing that pulled me in wasn't the occasional winning slip; it was noticing how often the obvious read on a match turned out to be wrong once you sat with the detail for a while. What kept me from settling into one specialism was a stretch of fixtures where I had a firm view on the scoreline but no real edge on the result, or a strong feeling about goals while the result line looked like a toss-up. After enough of those, it stopped making sense to force every match through the same lens. So I do the same groundwork regardless of the game — form read in context rather than at face value, how the two sides actually match up, defensive habits, scheduling, what each team has to play for — and then I land on whichever market gives me the cleanest read. Some weeks that's an Under, some weeks it's an away win nobody fancies, some weeks it's BTTS, and plenty of weeks it's nothing at all. That last part matters more than people expect. The hardest discipline in this is admitting when a fixture doesn't hand you anything worth backing and leaving it alone. Two years in, the main thing I've learned is how regularly I'm wrong, and how much being honest about that has tightened up the calls I do make.
