Argentine Primera Draws: How Often Games End Level and Do They Pay?
Argentina's reputation as draw country holds up, but the market already prices most of it. Here is where the draw price lands, where it misses, and which clubs share points most.

Argentina has a reputation as draw country, and it is usually the first thing people mention when the Primera comes up. I wanted to know whether that reputation is real and whether the draw price already accounts for it. This study covers 5,330 Argentine Primera matches from 2012–2024, each with a full-time result and 1X2 odds.
The short answer is that 30.0% of those matches ended level, against a margin-free implied rate of 29.3%. The market is very close, and backing every draw at a major bookmaker returned −5.0%. If you came here from my free 1X2 picks page, this is the background I check before I consider a draw in this league.
Chapter 1Argentine draw rates swing by year while prices barely move
The line chart sets the actual draw rate for each calendar year against what the odds implied once the margin was stripped out. The implied line sits in a narrow band, while the actual line swings around it. Among full years, the high was 33.5% in 2023 across 582 matches and the low was 23.6% in 2017 across 406 matches.
That gap tells me bookmakers price draws from a long-run base rate rather than chasing each season. Bear in mind the league changed size and format several times, including the cup-style Copa de la Liga phases, so each year is not quite the same competition.
2012 covers August–December only; Data run to early/mid-October 2024, so 2024 seasons are incomplete.

| Actual draws | Implied by odds | |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 | 33.0% | 29.6% |
| 2013 | 33.2% | 29.7% |
| 2014 | 27.0% | 29.8% |
| 2015 | 30.3% | 29.4% |
| 2016 | 29.6% | 29.2% |
| 2017 | 23.6% | 28.4% |
| 2018 | 30.1% | 29.1% |
| 2019 | 28.4% | 29.6% |
| 2020 | 29.0% | 28.4% |
| 2021 | 29.2% | 28.5% |
| 2022 | 30.5% | 28.9% |
| 2023 | 33.5% | 30.2% |
| 2024 | 31.4% | 30.4% |
My takeaway is not to read one draw-heavy season as a new normal. A single year can run well above or below the price and then drift back.
Chapter 2Mid-priced draws land slightly more often than the odds suggest
Splitting matches by draw price shows how well the market is calibrated. Under 3.00, the draw landed 32.5% of the time against 32.2% priced over 1,551 matches, and at 3.00–3.19 it was 31.2% against 30.2%. The biggest gap in the draw's favour came at 3.20–3.39, where 915 matches drew 30.2% of the time against 28.5% priced.
The one band running the other way is 3.70+. Those 505 matches drew 20.8% of the time, below the 22.2% the odds implied. These tend to be games with a clear favourite, and in Argentina that favourite seems to see the job through more often than the price allows.
Bars show the 95% range of the actual draw rate.

| Priced | Actually drew | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3.00 (1,551 matches) | 32.2% | 32.5% | ±2.3 |
| 3.00–3.19 (1,784 matches) | 30.2% | 31.2% | ±2.1 |
| 3.20–3.39 (915 matches) | 28.5% | 30.2% | ±3 |
| 3.40–3.69 (575 matches) | 26.5% | 27.1% | ±3.6 |
| 3.70+ (505 matches) | 22.2% | 20.8% | ±3.5 |
The error bars matter here. In the smaller bands the range around the actual rate is wide enough that the mid-price gap could be noise, so I treat it as a lean rather than a rule.
Chapter 3Backing draws loses at standard prices, especially above 3.70
This chart turns those hit rates into money. At the major bookmaker's price every band lost, from −1.2% at 3.20–3.39 down to −13.9% at 3.70+. Backing every draw returned −5.0% overall.
At the best available price the picture flips to +1.2% overall and +5.2% in the 3.20–3.39 band. That is the main caveat of this study. Best prices are the top quote across many books at the moment of collection, and almost nobody gets all of them, so those figures flatter what a real bettor would see.
View the data: backing the draw in argentina: return by price
| Major bookmaker | Best price | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3.00 | −5.9% | −0.4% |
| 3.00–3.19 | −3.8% | +2.1% |
| 3.20–3.39 | −1.2% | +5.2% |
| 3.40–3.69 | −4.2% | +3.2% |
| 3.70+ | −13.9% | −6.5% |
| All matches | −5.0% | +1.2% |
What I take from it is that the price you get largely decides whether the Argentine draw is a loser or close to break-even. Even at best price, the 3.70+ band still returned −6.5%, which makes it the clearest band to leave alone.
Chapter 4Belgrano and Unión Santa Fe draw more than anyone else
Among clubs with 150+ league matches, Belgrano top the list at 36.1% of 299 matches, followed by Unión Santa Fe at 34.7% of 352 and Platense at 34.4% of 154. At the other end, Aldosivi drew just 21.6% of 218 matches.
Club rates mix home and away games across many seasons, managers and squads, so I use them as a starting point rather than a verdict. A club with a long record of draws may already be priced that way, and I would want to know who is in the dugout now before leaning on the history.

| Draw % of league matches, clubs with 150+ matches | |
|---|---|
| Belgrano (299) | 36.1% |
| Unión Santa Fe (352) | 34.7% |
| Platense (154) | 34.4% |
| Independiente (375) | 33.6% |
| Banfield (337) | 32.9% |
| San Lorenzo (409) | 32.8% |
| Huracán (313) | 32.6% |
| Atlético Tucumán (283) | 32.2% |
| San Martín San Juan (167) | 31.7% |
| Olimpo (163) | 31.3% |
The scorelines back up the low-scoring feel of this league. Of all draws, 40.1% finished 0-0 and 43.5% finished 1-1, so 83.6% came from those two results, with 13.2% ending 2-2.
Before you bet in this league
- Draws are common here30.0% of matches end level and the odds imply 29.3%, so the market already treats this as a draw-heavy league. Don't assume the draw is undervalued just because it happens often.
- Watch the 3.20–3.39 bandDraws priced 3.20–3.39 landed 30.2% of the time against 28.5% priced, the widest gap in the draw's favour. At the major bookmaker it still returned −1.2%, so any edge depends on consistently beating that quote.
- Long draw prices disappointAt 3.70+ draws landed 20.8% of the time against 22.2% priced and returned −13.9% at the major bookmaker. This is the band where the market overrates the draw.
