MLS Playoffs vs Regular Season: Are Knockout Scores Tighter?
I split eleven MLS seasons into regular season and play-offs to see whether knockout football really tightens the scoreline, and where the prices lag behind.

Every autumn the same idea comes round: once MLS reaches the play-offs, nerves take over and the goals dry up. I wanted to test that against the records rather than my memory, so I split 11 complete seasons into regular-season and knockout games. That gives 4,430 matches in all, 180 of them play-offs.
The short answer is yes, a little. Play-off games averaged 2.7 goals against 2.9, Under 2.5 landed in 47.2% of them, and 0-0 turned up more often. Readers of my free correct score picks page know I lean on base rates like these before I look at any single fixture, and this shift is real but modest. The bigger surprise was at the home end, where the prices did not fully keep up.
Chapter 1Play-off games lean slightly towards Under and home wins
This chart puts five rates side by side for each phase. Under 2.5 rises from 44.3% in the regular season to 47.2% in the play-offs, 0-0 climbs from 6.3% to 8.9%, and one-goal margins move from 39.9% to 42.8%. Taken together, that is the tighter knockout game people talk about.
The draw line goes the other way, which I did not expect. Level scores fell from 25.4% to 22.8%, while home wins jumped from 50.7% to 55.6%. Play-off games are a bit tighter, but they are not more drawn. The home side simply edges more of them.

| Regular season | Play-offs | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 2.5 (play-offs n=180) | 44.3% | 47.2% | ±7.3 |
| Draw at full time (play-offs n=180) | 25.4% | 22.8% | ±6.1 |
| Home win (play-offs n=180) | 50.7% | 55.6% | ±7.3 |
| 1-goal margin (play-offs n=180) | 39.9% | 42.8% | ±7.2 |
| 0-0 (play-offs n=180) | 6.3% | 8.9% | ±4.2 |
Read the whiskers on the play-off dots before drawing firm conclusions. With only 180 games, the Under 2.5 rate carries a range of ±7.3 points and the 0-0 rate ±4.2. Formats have also changed over the years, from two-legged ties to single games, and some recorded scores may include extra time. I treat every play-off figure here as a direction, not a precise rate.
Chapter 22-1 still leads, but 1-0 and 0-0 climb
At the top, nothing changes: 2-1 is the most common score in both phases, at 11.3% in the regular season and 12.8% in the play-offs, which is 23 games. Below that the order reshuffles. In the regular season 1-1 sits second at 11.1%. In the play-offs 1-0 takes second place at 11.1%, with 1-1 and 2-0 both on 9.4%.
The low end is where I see the knockout effect most clearly. 0-0 rises to fifth at 8.9%, and 2-2, sixth in the regular season at 6.4%, drops out of the play-off top eight entirely. Its place goes to 3-1 at 8.3%.
| Rank | Regular season | Share | Play-offs | Share | Play-off games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2-1 | 11.3% | 2-1 | 12.8% | 23 |
| 2 | 1-1 | 11.1% | 1-0 | 11.1% | 20 |
| 3 | 1-0 | 9.6% | 1-1 | 9.4% | 17 |
| 4 | 2-0 | 8.0% | 2-0 | 9.4% | 17 |
| 5 | 2-2 | 6.4% | 0-0 | 8.9% | 16 |
| 6 | 0-0 | 6.3% | 3-1 | 8.3% | 15 |
| 7 | 1-2 | 6.1% | 1-2 | 7.8% | 14 |
| 8 | 0-1 | 6.0% | 0-1 | 7.2% | 13 |
For correct score, that points me towards the narrow home-win cluster of 2-1, 1-0 and 2-0 rather than the high-scoring draw. The last column is a useful reality check, though. A line like 3-1 rests on just 15 games, so one odd season could move it a long way.
Chapter 3The goal drop arrives with the play-offs, not the run-in
I wanted to know whether the caution starts early, in the final weeks of the regular season when places are at stake. It does not. Across the last three rounds, 372 matches, 30.9% of games had 4+ goals, close to the 32.1% for the whole regular season, and 0–1 goal games sat at 22.6% against 21.9%.
The real change comes in the play-offs. There, 0–1 goal games rise to 27.2% and 4+ goal games fall to 26.7%, with 3 goals on 26.1% and 2 goals on 20%. The extra low-scoring games come mostly at the expense of the wild ones.
View the data: goals per game: run-in and play-offs
| 0–1 goals | 2 goals | 3 goals | 4+ goals | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular season (4,250) | 21.9% | 22.4% | 23.6% | 32.1% |
| Last 3 rounds (372) | 22.6% | 21.8% | 24.7% | 30.9% |
| Play-offs (180) | 27.2% | 20.0% | 26.1% | 26.7% |
My takeaway is to treat the run-in as ordinary regular-season football for goals markets. Any knockout adjustment belongs to the play-offs themselves.
Chapter 4Prices underrated play-off home sides by a clear margin
This chart compares the margin-free home win chance in the 1X2 price with how often the home side actually won. In the regular season the gap is small: priced at 48.3%, landed at 50.7%, with a tight range of 1.5 points on 4,250 matches.
In the play-offs the price barely moved, rising only to 49.3%, while results jumped to 55.6%. The market seems to have priced knockout home sides much like regular-season ones, even though they won noticeably more often.
View the data: mls home wins: priced vs landed
| Priced | Landed | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular season (4,250 matches) | 48.3% | 50.7% | ±1.5 |
| Play-offs (180 matches) | 49.3% | 55.6% | ±7.3 |
The play-off range here is ±7.3 points, so I would not assume the gap is as large as it looks. Even so, it is the one place in this study where the result and the price disagree by more than the noise in the regular-season numbers.
Before you bet in this league
- Shade slightly towards UnderUnder 2.5 landed in 47.2% of play-off games against 44.3% in the regular season. That is a nudge rather than a flip, because Over still landed in a little over half of knockout games.
- Treat the run-in normallyThe last three rounds produced 4+ goals in 30.9% of games, close to the season-wide 32.1%. Do not expect play-off caution before the play-offs start.
- Compare home prices with resultsPlay-off home sides were priced at a 49.3% win chance but won 55.6%. Check a play-off home price against that landed rate rather than assuming the market has already adjusted.
