MLS Under 2.5 Goals by Match Odds: When Do Low-Scoring Games Land?
MLS is a goal-friendly league, but the match odds give a useful hint about when a tight, low-scoring game is more likely to turn up.

MLS has a reputation for open, end-to-end football, and the numbers mostly back that up. Across 5,233 matches from 2012โ2024, the league averaged 2.9 goals per game and only 43.7% finished with two goals or fewer. That gives a fair Under 2.5 price of 2.29. The question I wanted to answer is whether the favourite's 1X2 price changes that picture.
It does, and in a way that fits how I think about these games. When one side is priced under 1.60, Under 2.5 landed just 39.5% of the time. When the favourite was 2.20 or bigger, it climbed to 47.1%. These are the baseline numbers I check before anything goes on my free over/under picks page, and the four charts below show where they come from.
Chapter 1Under 2.5 lands more often as the favourite gets longer
Each bar groups matches by the shorter of the two win prices, so the left side holds the lopsided games and the right side holds the even ones. The Under 2.5 rate starts at 39.5% for favourites under 1.60, moves to 42.2% in the 1.60โ1.79 band and reaches 44.5% at 1.80โ1.99. The highlighted bar, favourites at 2.20+, is the highest at 47.1% across 1,415 matches.
My reading is simple. A heavy favourite usually means one team expects to score more than once, and the weaker side still nicks the odd goal. Evenly matched teams are more likely to cancel each other out.

| Share of matches with 0โ2 goals, by the shorter 1X2 price (matches) | |
|---|---|
| Under 1.60 (839) | 39.5% |
| 1.60โ1.79 (1,037) | 42.2% |
| 1.80โ1.99 (987) | 44.5% |
| 2.00โ2.19 (955) | 43.2% |
| 2.20+ (1,415) | 47.1% |
The line is not perfectly smooth. The 2.00โ2.19 band dips back to 43.2%, so I treat this as a broad tendency rather than a staircase I can lean on band by band.
Chapter 2Short favourites push MLS games into four goals or more
This is the chart I find most useful for correct score thinking, because it splits the totals into 0โ1, 2, 3 and 4+ goals. With a favourite under 1.60, 38.1% of matches had four or more goals. With a favourite at 2.20 or bigger, that fell to 29.5%. The low end moves the other way: 0โ1 goal games made up 16.7% of the short-favourite matches and 24.5% of the even ones.
The middle hardly moves. Two-goal games sit at 22.8% under 1.60 and 22.6% at 2.20+, so the price mostly shifts the tails. For me, that means that in an evenly priced match, 1-0 and 0-0 deserve more attention than they would in a mismatch.

| 0โ1 goals | 2 goals | 3 goals | 4+ goals | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.60 | 16.7% | 22.8% | 22.4% | 38.1% |
| 1.60โ1.79 | 20.5% | 21.7% | 24.9% | 32.9% |
| 1.80โ1.99 | 23.4% | 21.1% | 24.4% | 31.1% |
| 2.00โ2.19 | 22.1% | 21.2% | 23.8% | 33.0% |
| 2.20+ | 24.5% | 22.6% | 23.3% | 29.5% |
Chapter 3Fair Under 2.5 odds shorten from 2.53 to 2.12
The table puts every Under line side by side. Under 1.5 rises from 16.7% to 24.5% across the bands, and Under 3.5 rises from 61.9% to 70.5%, so the pattern holds on every line, not only on 2.5. The fair Under 2.5 price goes from 2.53 with a favourite under 1.60 to 2.12 with one at 2.20+, against 2.29 for the league as a whole.
One honest limit: these records hold no goal-line prices, so I cannot show what backing the Under at real prices would have returned. A fair price is only the break-even figure implied by past hit rates, not a forecast for any single match. It is something to compare a bookmaker's number with, nothing more.
| Favourite odds | Matches | U1.5 | U2.5 | Fair U2.5 | U3.5 | Goals/game |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.60 | 839 | 16.7% | 39.5% | 2.53 | 61.9% | 3.2 |
| 1.60โ1.79 | 1,037 | 20.5% | 42.2% | 2.37 | 67.1% | 2.9 |
| 1.80โ1.99 | 987 | 23.4% | 44.5% | 2.25 | 68.9% | 2.8 |
| 2.00โ2.19 | 955 | 22.1% | 43.2% | 2.31 | 67.0% | 2.9 |
| 2.20+ | 1,415 | 24.5% | 47.1% | 2.12 | 70.5% | 2.7 |
Home or away favourite barely matters, either. Under 2.5 landed 43.7% with a home favourite and 44.0% with an away favourite, so the size of the price matters more than which side holds it.
Chapter 4Season-to-season swings are wider than the price effect
Grouping by calendar year shows how much the league's scoring mood drifts. Under 2.5 peaked at 51.8% in 2013 and bottomed out at 37.0% in 2018, a wider spread than the gap between the shortest and longest favourite bands. The 2024 figure only runs to October, and play-off games are included, so a few totals may carry extra-time goals.
The lesson I take is that the all-time 43.7% is an anchor, not a fixed law. If a season is running hot or cold, I would rather weigh that drift alongside the price band than trust either on its own.

Before you bet in this league
- Expect goals by defaultOnly 43.7% of MLS matches stayed Under 2.5, with 2.9 goals per game. The fair Under price of 2.29 is the number to compare any offered price with before thinking the Under is generous.
- Heavy favourite, lean away from UnderWith a favourite under 1.60, Under 2.5 landed 39.5% of the time and 38.1% of games had four or more goals. A short Under price in these matches has history against it.
- Even match, low scores liveWith the favourite at 2.20+, Under 2.5 rose to 47.1% and 0โ1 goal games reached 24.5%. This is where a fair Under price of 2.12 sits, though seasons have ranged from 37.0% to 51.8%.
